We have a mountain of work to do to support women and families. Passing this “bill” is not one of those. In addition to the minor problem of unconstitutionality, and apparently viewing Iowa’s women as guinea pigs in the attempt to push a test case up to the US Supreme Court, the “Fetal Heartbeat Bill”, if enacted, would cause the U of I’s OB/GYN program to lose accreditation. It would further reduce the availability of reproductive healthcare in the state.
I have talked to doctors who have said that this bill, combined with the de-appropriations bill that must pass in some form, would cause them to leave the state. A mere thought of an exodus of qualified professionals and the inability of our premiere medical school to educate doctors should ring alarm bells, if forcing women of all ages – including teens – to give birth does not already.
We have so many positive things to work on: improving access to reproductive health care, access to affordable daycare, and family leave, to name just a few – let’s focus on those and improve lives – and with them, economic development opportunities across Iowa!
